my life is complete.

i finally found edamame in a local store. hooray!

christmas shopping.

there are so many eggs on our christmas food shopping list one might think we actually want to celebrate easter this week.

on our menu are lasagna (without meat, though, obviously), monkfish with chestnut-sweet potato-mash and veges, romanlily's mustard-maple salmon (without hollandaise, though) and pumpkin soup.

and tiramisu, white chocolate mousse, an apple pie and a honey cake. oh yes.

desserts - if not now, when?

what i used to eat.

back in august, diane from fit to the finish wrote a post on how she managed to fit 3000 kcal into her day. that post - like so many of her posts - hit very close to home: i ate that much as well. sure, my thyroid went bust and slowed down my metabolism, but i got fat because i ate too much and moved too little.

so here's what would have been on my menu on a typical work-day in early 2008.

breakfast
2 pretzels (7 pts.)
1 chocolate roll (4pts)
0,7l apple mango juice (6,5pts)

lunch
1 pretzel (3,5pts)
1 large cheese roll (9pts)
piece of cake (5,5pts)

afternoon snack
150g gummy smurfs (8,5pts)

coming home snack
1/2 pack of pringles (11,5pts)

dinner
rice (4pts)
creamy spinach (7pts)
fried veggie fingers (8pts)

dessert
1/2 pack of choco crossies (10,5pts)
soy pudding (2pts)

late night snack
package of roasted cashew nuts (14 pts)

total: 101 pts
at 90kg, i probably wouldn't have needed more than 26 points or so to maintain my weight. sure, it's an extreme day. but day like this, was, by no means, unusal. the weekends, especially with the ex, were just as crazy. tins of wasabi peanuts, outrageous mac'n'cheese with three types of cheese, endless breakfasts with omelettes and three bread rolls.

oh, and add at least 2 litres of diet coke to that. i firmly believe that (work stress, loneliness and general unhappiness aside) diet soda (coke zero, diet coke, pepsi max - i loved them all) had a lot to do with my overeating. it's one thing where i really disagree with the ww belief system, btw: their love for artifical sweetners. i hate that they use so much of it in their recipes, and that so many people in their crazy forums share insane sweetner loaden and basically nutrient-free recipes (fluffed up sweetener semolina pudding, anyone?) as if they were weight loss magic. these days? i avoid artifical sweetners like the plague.

these days, a typical workday menu looks like this:

breakfast
carrots (until i am full) (0 pts)
low fat herb quark (3,5pts)

snack
1 amaranth bar, covered with dark chocolate (2pts)

lunch
1 tub total yoghurt (1,5pts)
all bran (2,5pts)
1 teaspoon honey (0pts)
1 apple (0pts)

afternoon snack
1 apple (opts)
1 kiwi (0pts)

dinner
piece of baked, marinated salmon (4pts)
lentils (until i am full) (3pts)
broccoli (opts)
glass of wine (1pts)

dessert
2 pieces high quality choc (1,5pts)
espresso (0pts)

total: 19pts
i get 19 pts a day right now, while still being on the losing track.

other typical snacks are whole wheat rolls with vegemite (2 pts) or 4 rice crackers with 1 teaspoon almond butter (3pts). for dinner, the bf and i often have soups or stews from 101cookbooks, veggie pasta with tomato based sauces or risottos. when i eat by myself (happens at least once a week), i usually cook up some whole wheat pasta, a giant amount of broccoli and only add fresh ground pepper and parmesan.

comparing these two diets, it's pretty obvious: these days, i get much more protein, much more fibre, much more vitamins. not really surprising that i am a much happier me.

[disclaimer: ww programs & points calculation differ from country to county. round here, you get lots of fruits and veges at 0pts, and you can eat a variety of carbs (like pasta and potatoes) and proteins (certain fish, low fat quark, legumes, etc.) until you're full for a set number of points (carbs=4, protein=3). i try to include these so called 'fill-up-foods' into at least one meal a day; also very useful when eating out!]

the return of the hunger.

remember the hunger? he's back.

i'm hungryhungryhungry these days, once again. it's not as bad as it was in july, but a wee bit annoying nonetheless.

i suspect that both my spanking new 10k-prep-running schedule and recent stress at work are to blame. these past few work days, i haven't had a lunch break and hence ate most of my daytime meals at my desk, which (as we all know) makes for non-conscious (and less satisfying) meals, even if they are healthy. bad me.

i hit a total low-point yesterday afternoon, when a quick trip to pick up a much needed prescription at my gp on a very late lunch break turned into a one-hour-wait and a frustrating chat that had me close to tears. when i left his office, i was supersad, exhausted, hungry and just generally frustrated. it got even worse when two pharmacies i went to didn't stock the meds i needed. when i got back to the office, i visited my old foe, the downstairs bakery, and bought a huge honey-sesame-granola slice.

that was a fail, yes. at least a kinda yummy one.

apart from that, i've been eating pretty well though, and pretty close to points, only occasionally digging into my activity points (there are so many of them these days, too, ha). have been eating plenty of apples (so many to choose from right now!), which is a good thing, i reckon, and still mainly staying away from bread in all its variations. and the few times that i've chosen bread and it's evil pals, i've noticed again and again how non-filling it is.

already noticed what a difference my new breakfast (all bran, fage, apple) makes: it really fills me up and leaves me satisfied for a while. good stuff.

strategies to combat the hunger in the next few days (same old, same old):
  • keep eating apples;
  • make an effort to eat protein at every meal;
  • have workday meals away from the desk; and
  • have fewer bars (they're not that filling, after all).
totally do-able: been there, done that.

brekkie with bob.

fage + all bran + an apple = yum!

(and yeah, i bought a spongebob bowl for my office breakfasts today. 't was an impulse purchase while waiting at the checkout of the cheapo supermarket down the street. better a spongebob bowl than a bunch of chocolate bars, no?)

iron will.

i resisted.
not one m&m, not one smurf has passed my lips, and those little beasties are still around today, obviously. i'm deaf to their siren songs now. go me.

last night's workout session was, well, interesting. i just didn't feel it, in a way. i was kinda tired, even though i pushed myself rather hard. that general tiredness only eased up after my treadmill run, which was - compared to my real world runs in lugano - all of a sudden terribly boring and lame. very funny, that. i'll do some more real world runs these coming days, one on sunday, and then two next week, in munich and hamburg. yay.

during my gym visit, i finally checked the ingredients of their complimentary on-tap sports drinks. in the past, i'd usually drink them very diluted (probably half/half), during every visit. not sure why i never checked what exactly i was consuming there (apart from the flavour, obviously), but i am glad that i finally did. the main ingredients: inverted sugar syrup and a whole collection of sweeteners. stuff i both try to avoid. the sugar-shit because of the yeast issue, the sweeteners because of insuline and everything else. so: no more on-tap sports drinks, unless in case of emergency, like an extreme blood sugar crash. had sparkling water during my workout yesterday, instead, and that worked well, even though i drank significantly less, just 0,7l during my 2 1/2 hours there.

so that's that. in other news, i finally did a proper weigh-in (four days late, due to our travels and, well, life): 66,6kg, still, which is awesome, considering that i've had pizza three times in the past week, dolci for breakfast and drank more energy drinks than water over the weekend. definitely better than expected. not sure i'll manage to achieve my goal of 65kg by sunday in a week though. i'd be happy enough about a 65 in front of the comma, anyway.

we feed the world.

last night, the bf and i watched we feed the world with the kids. it was long overdue, we'd both wanted to see it ever since it came out.

i thought i was already all disillusioned about the food industry. i've been a vegetarian (and at times leaning towards veganism) for the past six years, and buy lots of organic, locally grown food because of how horrible the food industry is. but that movie had me crying, yet again, over tons of discarded bread, veggies planted by immigrants in spain, chicken slaughtering machines and the diabolic man who runs nestlé. i'd seen it all before, yet the movie was a total kick in the gut. using violence as a political force seems kinda reasonable to me right now, at least as long as it's against nestlé, monsanto and friends.

plus side: i think the movie freaked the bf's 18-year old son and his galpal out so much, that they are permanently turned off maccas. that'd be awesome.

the bf and i are now trying to come up with ways of turning our anger into action. for starters, i'll get rid of the bottled water that i drink at work and avoid nestlé as much as possible. the bf will get rid of his nestlé water cooler at the shop, and together, we'll make an effort go even more local and organic with our shopping than we already are. maybe it's time to get a veggie subscription from a local farm?

inspiration. [#5]

good advice from the nutritionista on dealing with different eaters.

had that kind of situation on tuesday, when the dinner plans the bf and i turned into classic german style abendbrot (literally "evening bread" - think cheese, cold cuts, bread) with the crew.

i was really taken aback at first - i'd saved points for dinner, and was just not prepared to waste them on stuff i didn't like anyway. and well - i eat neither cold cuts nor cheese and hardly any bread, after all.

i was pretty annoyed there for a minute, because all the shops were closed at that time already, and i couldn't buy healthier choices for me, and our friend t. kept pestering me that 'one time didn't matter'. the bf felt rather guilty about that sudden change of plans and his inability to do something about it; he's awesome in trying to accommodate my eating style, doesn't dress salads like he used to and the like, and really wants to support me.

he couldn't then, so i decided to not get too worked up about it, headed back to the office where i grabbed what was supposed to be next days' brekkie and my jar of vegemite. so while everyone else indulged, i had an ok (if not particularly exciting) 7.5 points dinner, that left me feeling nicely full. and later at home, i indulged with some choc.

i could never ever be with someone, who was not supportive of my eating habits. i don't expect the bf (who is super-skinny, by default and can eat anything, really) to follow my 'rules', but i do expect him to support me in following them and to work on compromises that work for both of us, such as not using butter when he cooks or undressed salad that we then each fix however we like it. he's awesome, in that regard, and it helps that he's into cooking, big-time, and and adventurous eater in general. and he doesn't even laugh when i break one piece of lindt choc into 12 little parts.

it sounds harsh, but dating a fat person is something that i will never ever do again, should i ever re-enter the dating pool (which i don't plan on doing, anyway). my ex was seriously overweight, and i tried to tell myself, that it didn't matter, that his personality was so awesome and whatnot, but it mattered. a lot. we had no sex life to speak of because of his weight and bad body image, which totally killed my libido as well. and i adapted his unhealthy lifestyle and gained about 10kg in the first year that we were dating, before i started ww. anyway. those days are over, and i'm very happy about that.

the munchies.

two weeks ago, it was the hunger. now i'm struggling with the munchies. i have this bizarre urge to shove stuff into my mouth constantly right now. i am resisting quite well, actually, but running out of points by eating, well, not much. not sure, what's to blame - lack of protein? is that whole wheat bread i've been eating making me this ravenous? (maybe being pretty much breadless is better for me after all?) or maybe it's that perpetual state of pms that i am in, being on cd 40+ (or whatever)? (thanks for nothing pcos!)

whatever is to blame: i hate it. hate it. hate it. hate it.

things are alright, still, though. i'm holding up, following ww while being pretty much not-stressed about it and had two pretty much perfect work outs this week. i just need to add some more variety in my diet. and some more stuff that actually fills me up. i've been eating pretty high fiber this week, and that's messing with my weigh-ins - and despite the fiber, i'm pretty stopped up, yet again (but when i'm not, it's pretty impressive) and whatnot.

kinda expecting that there won't be a loss this coming sunday (not surprising, really, as last weeks number was a wee bit too dehydrated-low or whatnot, anyway).

oh well. i'll keep doing what i'm doing right. and improve on the things i've been doing not so right. because all in all? it's all pretty damn fine. munchies or not.

the hunger.

i've been struggling a wee bit to stay within points these past days, for the first time in ages, really. shouldn't be surprised though: this week has been überstressful with the upcoming opening of the shop and all, i have been sleeping too little and not planning my meals well.

and then there's the hunger. oh, the hunger. i eat a giant serving of carrots and quark and a protein bar and 30 minutes later am hungry again. like: ravenously hungry. so yesterday, out of that terribly hunger, i had falafel for lunch, and today a breadroll with mozzarella and tomatoes. both helped for a wee while, but didn't feel too great, really; like reverting back to old habits.

i suspect that i need to eat significantly more protein, just to stay satisfied longer. and add more zero-point stuff, more fruit, more veges. and maybe more diverse flavours, just to make it more exciting.

next week, though.

this week, i just need to keep hanging on. and pat myself on the back. next week will be less stressful, oh yes.

[kinda exciting, nonetheless: 70,5 on the scale this morning. 69, here i come!]

progress.

i'm at 74,2kg now (or was on sunday, at least). and i'm back in the gym. joined a new gym exactly a week ago, a just opened, pretty expensive one, that i'll love to go to though. super awesome service, lots of classes, nice equipement, lots of tech (vacuum training, power plate). it's so odd, my body is already remembering what it was like to be fit and active. have taken two pump classes so far, and ye olde body loved it.

so that's all good. eating has been kinda okay as well, lots of fruit (strawberries, yay) and veges with the odd proteinbar thrown in. i just get so very hungry and cranky at times that it's hard to focus and then make smart choices. had pizza on sunday night, too, when the bf and i got home after a nightout (where we had expected food, but got none), too tired to cook ourselves. made up for those points by working out yesterday. also got a majorly unhappy tummy these days, i'm either constipated or bloated or have bms in a row (three, no four this morning). my tummy is achy almost every night after dinner, too (am i overeating on the pasta?). no matter how many post-dinner teas i drink or no-bloat prebiotic yoghurts/curds i have. duh.

the worst thing about my bod though is the continuing girly trouble. i suspect that i have yet another yeast infection, and then there are the still kinda inonclusive results of this months hormone check (more results later today, i'm supersupernervous). i am dead sure it's pcos. and so hope he'll finally give me a glucose tolerance test. anyway.

i am starting to see that i've lost weight again. my face looks slimmer, my clothes fit better. last night, in bed, the bf told me that he "could see my ribs". better get used to the view, boy. :)
